Yesterday Ted did an interview from his home office via Skype. It was for CBN’s new streaming online channel. At just over two minutes, it is probably the shortest interview he’s ever done, but I think he made the most of it. So, for those of you who need a Friday Ted Dekker fix, here you go.

Superstories and MetaArcs
Why am I here?
We spend most of our lives trying to answer that one question. There’s something in our DNA that drives us to discover why we were born and then to figure out how to fulfill it, whatever “it” is. That’s why we consume so many self-help books, isn’t it? To recover our lost identity and find resolution to our story. To give meaning to what we do with our time and talents.
We want to understand what we’re about. We want things to make sense. What we’re searching for, really, is something I call our “superstory,” the overriding story arc or theme of our life that informs and drives everything else.
You might also call it the “meta-arc.” In Roman times “‘meta’ was a structure mounted on the ends of the central spina in Roman chariot races. In many of the Romance languages, the term “meta” is basically an aim or goal. Roman Charioteers would aim their chariots for this pole-like structure during their races, in order to stay on track (from Wikipedia).” The meta-story is the aim, the structure that keeps us on track. And the world turns.
It’s funny how the world keeps moving without you even when you’re forced to sit it out for a day or two and take a breather. Today’s bench time for me, I guess. My wife and I are both sick with the crud. Fever, chills, sore throat…the whole nine yards. No fun.
I’m good for very little when I’m sick. My wife can attest to that. I responded to some emails earlier, napped (because I slept all of 2 hours last night), made some phone calls, napped a bit more, and prepped some things for upcoming meetings. Sometimes I think sickness is our body’s way (or God’s) of getting us to chill out, slow down, and take just a nap. That can be the best thing for us sometimes.
So, I’ll plug back in with you guys tomorrow. I have lots of fun stuff to share over the coming week, including some Ted Dekker news. I’ve included the image above as a little treat for you. You are the first to see it. It’s one of the storyboard images that I just received of the stage production we’re concepting, called “Beautiful.” Time will tell whether or not a production is viable, but we’re working on it (among other projects) as if it is.
Enjoy your family and take some time to rest and reflect. Cheers.
