it is true tat the vast amount of youtube, blogs, etc... is all mindless crap. BUT... it's entertainment. We are not a culture that cares about what it neeeeds anymore because we have everything (at least... we think we do). Now we just want something to stare at. We want entertainment. We don't need movies, mindless magazines with common sense sex "tips", or expensive designer beverages. But, we want them. And really, there's nothing wrong with that. I love designer beverages, and nice clothes, and apple products and MOVIES and mens health magazine. And smart companies make you WANT their products so much that you think you neeeed it, like a fat kid who neeeeeeeeds (wants) more cookies even though he's full. SO in the end, the comments above have good points. Give something of value and share the gospel but it doesn't end there.... you have to make people WANT your product for it to get attention. Like CS Lewis said about sneaking salvation past the dragons.
but maybe i am way off the path of what kevin was asking. Maybe Kevin is asking more of actual meaningful relationships etc.... in which case I have a ton of facebook friends who I don't even really know. social network sites (at least for me) have a way of trivializing relationships. All of a sudden it's entertainment, free entertainment, with now real investment. you read people updates give a thumbs up or a lol.
But as far as business goes... as far as getting noticed as a writer or film maker or talented individual, it's about packaging. we are a superficial society who LOVES shiny things. SOrry if that answer was way too convoluted. I haven't had my coffee yet.

Is it safe to assume that most of the blogs, emails and youtube videos are just meaningless crap? (Because I'm sort of going with that theory...) If so, then it seems like the best way to stand out is to provide something that's truly of worth.

Sure, a lot of people will be fooled by the time wasters (and some of those can be pretty entertaining), but what keeps people coming back? It's getting something with value.

Value can mean tangible goods, advice, encouragement, help, inspiration, relationships, community. Whatever people truly need. When I consider the few blogs and sites I frequent, each of them provides one or more of these.

Simmering in my brain is the idea of if I had a blog, what would it look like? What would it provide? I think without a clear purpose it would be a wasted effort. So I won't be starting one until I can answer this question for myself, and provide something of value to others.

It all depends on the amount of attention that people want. What they're content with. Some people go out and try to be viral. Sometimes it can be completely random (Videos like 'ouch charlie' etc), but the true stars online are the ones who don't care about fame and just do what they do best.
