Honestly, this is how we come up with ideas for clients and how most of them go about the creative process themselves.

The outcome is all about the process, which is difficult for most people to swallow because it's not sexy or easy, which we're addicted to both. Most people only see the exceptions to the rule (i.e. those who win instant success) or assume an idea came easy. But the truth is much more prickly than that.

I saw a great video earlier today that the Navy is using to promote the SEALs since enlistment is down. They highlight one of their own, a guy named Goggins, who is also an ultra-marathoner and adventure athlete. In it he says, "The only easy day was yesterday." He talks about persevering in a way that makes me scratch my head and say, "He's a cyborg for sure." But he's basically modeling what we're talking about. The visible results all come from unseen work...and LOTS of it.

Exactly. One of my old teachers always encouraged us to come up with multiple ideas by saying, "I liked my first girlfriend, but I'm sure glad I didn't marry her."

For the past few years I've been stuck in the... Mourning phase of ideas. ^^; I have a lot of ideas, but when I keep finding bad to mediocre ideas I hit a wall and then just stop.

I think I'm going to keep shifting through ideas as they come and hold onto a few and play with them more than I have in the past.

Who knows maybe I'll find that 1%

Thanks for pointing out that having a lot of... cruddy... ideas isn't such a bad thing after all!

I'm lovin' this. Makes me want to take a trip to the lakeside with my notepad -- a notepad, of course, bulging with well over 100 pages. =)
