My college professor defined design as “the process of problem solving.” To solve a problem you have to experiment with different solutions. What you said about art is basically the same thing – trial and error, with refinement being a key aspect.
In that, patience is a big thing for me. I find that sometimes I’m so eager for the final, “perfect” result that it’s difficult to remember to enjoy the process, let alone allow it to happen.
I KNOW that design is a process, but I think I’m just now learning that storytelling is a process, too (on the 7th, 8th, 9th pass through of editing my novel).
